10:31p Sunroof! - Bear Melt
Sometimes great ideas in rock are really simple. Here's a case in point: Sunroof!'s Bear Melt does little but slide between two chords, with a ringing electronic whine and squiggly electric guitar providing the texture, but it does it so well that there are no complaints here. Whether or not this is a noise rock take on the Jefferson Airplane song of the same title, I couldn't really say. Having listened to them both recently, I can see some similarities.
Sunroof! is one of the many projects of Matthew Bower, who has been a part of the industrial rock underground since the '80s, long enough for cassette-only releases to morph into CD-Rs. Bear Melt is taken from the 2005 album Silver Bear Mist and it's very fine indeed.

10:23p Lothian Buses and Prams??
Hello,
I've been hearing through the grapevine stories that prams are no longer to be allowed on Lothian Buses. As I was on today with one, I'm a bit confused but further hunting turned up this story, as well as the anecdotal evidence.
Lothian Buses website says nothing that I can find. Does anyone know anymore? I've emailed for clarification but no one is in until Monday morning.
Thanks!

7:08p Trying again :)
I'm sorry if this offends anyone, please let me know if it does and I will of course remove the entry.
Anyway, I wrote this entry earlier this week about my lost bracelet that I bought in Edinburgh two weeks ago.
I have tried contacting the shop, and a kind member of this community even checked if they had an e-mail address, which they do not. So, yes, I called Cutie House twice. The first time I spoke to a lady there, she spoke very poor English and when she couldn't understand me she asked me to call back today because her partner would be there and they spoke better English, apparently. I called back, got the same lady, and she just hung up on me when she got frustrated that she didn't understand what I meant. (She understood the bracelet part - but when I tried to explain I am not from the UK I lost her.)
So therefore I am wondering, if anyone lives or works close to the shop Cutie House (located at the bottom of Cockburn Street), and would consider helping me with this, i.e. stopping by and asking if they still stock this bracelet - please comment here or contact me privately. I would so appreciate it, and again, sorry if this is offending anyone. I just really would love to have that bracelet again.

9:58a Writing Strengths
So last week on here and on my community LJ capes_coffins, we talked about writing weaknesses. This week we're talking about writing strengths. Now I don't know about you, but I have trouble seeing my own "strengths." That's not false modesty, that's just how I've always been. But we can psycho-analyze me another day, let's get on with it!
So tell me what your writing strengths are!

1:52p The festival
Does anyone have any recommendations of really good sites, guides or publications to checkout for what’s on? As I’m not a local, and never been at home for it before, I’m having a hell of a time trying to find out what’s on, where and when. I'm sure it's easy to find anything when you know where to look, but i don't.
I realise that there are countless different attractions, and there are loads of sources on the net, but the ones I’ve found only seem to advertise a particular topic or subject. I’d like to see and do as much as possible, a bit of everything, as I won’t know if I don’t like something if I don’t try it at least twice.

2:03p What sort of ethics do you subscribe to?
Does the right thing to do depend only on the consequences, or are some acts inherently right or wrong no matter what likely consequences follow?
From Wikipedia:Deontological ethics or deontology (Greek: δέον (deon) meaning 'obligation' or 'duty') is an approach to ethics that focuses on the rightness or wrongness of actions themselves, as opposed to the rightness or wrongness of the consequences of those actions.
Consequentialism refers to those moral theories which hold that the consequences of a particular action form the basis for any valid moral judgment about that action.
Virtue theory is a branch of moral philosophy that emphasizes character, rather than rules or consequences, as the key element of ethical thinking. Which of these best describes your position?

2:04p sewing machine/s
I just saw a sewing machine for £25 in Woolworths. I'm not *supposed* to be feeding my craft addiction, but I'm kind of tempted... has anybody heard any reviews of these basic machines? Or know where I could pick up a cheap or secondhand machine other than in Woolworths?
Thanks!

12:57p Abyss and Apex does it again...
New issue is out.
Really, go and read Väinämöinen and the Singing Fish, by Marissa K Lingen.
Pacing is slightly off but it's full of delightfully sly subversion of - and at the same time, faithful homage to - the Kalevala.
One of the best things I've read in a long time.

12:44p computer repair recommendations?
since I now have two dead desktop PCs, I think I should actually do something about getting them fixed. I'm assuming catastrophic hard drive failure on both, probably becasue I never clean the dust out of them.
One of them was bought at silicon group in Dalry, so I suppose I could take it there, but I thought I'd ask here first for any personal recommendations, especially places on the south side. the memories don't throw up much of use, and the entries are a couple years old now too.
thanks...

12:01p Casting Call
I am involved in putting on a performance of Mort at the Edinburgh Fringe, but one of the actors has dropped out at very short notice. I.e. this morning. Part is that of Goodie Whelper and other minor female parts. The show is going to be fabulous, on the top floor of C Main. Paul Kidby is donating his artwork for the posters, and a large chunk of money going to charity. Everyone involved with the production will have C passes, allowing them free tickets at C shows, for the duration of the festival.
We are urgently seeking someone who is
1) Female, youngish, 2) Available in Oxford a.s.a.p 3) Available in Edinburgh 25th July -> 25th August 4) Can act 5) Preferably can pay towards accomodation ~ £500 for the month, or sort their own. If you can't do this, still get in touch as the production may decide to cover cost of accomodation in order to y'know have a show.
If interested, call RHYS 07825957161 or email rhyslewisjones@gmail.com asap

8:17a Snowballs in hell
Well aptly named as Brookmyre is one of the ones I missed out on and my request has about as much hope of being answered but...
I was a muppet and didn't book my tickets in time. If anyone finds themselves with tickets to see Dawkins, Pratchett or Brookmyre in the book festival and can't make it please, please let me grovel and pay money and stuff to get them off you.

10:49p Diamanda Galás - The Litanies of Satan
In theory, I have nothing against ambient music. The idea is great: music that pervades the environment, and becomes part of it. You notice it no more than you would a familiar carpet, and yet it's much better than walking barefoot on a concrete floor. In practice, things tend to be a little different. What you actually end up with is frictionless new age dribble, or compilations of "classical music for relaxation". I don't think it's asking too much that if you like music you should actually listen to it.
This isn't a problem with Diamanda Galás. She has released some of the most confrontational music ever recorded. Like a modern Medea, she makes music filled with outrage and grief. It can be extraordinarily difficult listening: not only does it hit the listener like an emotional sledgehammer, it can also be a sonic one as well.
Such is the case with her 1981 debut, a fearsome interpretation of Beaudelaire's The Litanies of Satan. "Ô Satan," she intones, "prends pitié de ma longue misère!" It is a terrifying maelstrom of overdubbed voices and electronic manipulations, howling against an ancient injustice that refuses to die. This is a devastating performance, and an artistic triumph.

10:22p Google cars spotted again
Here are the Google cars today, parked in the car park beside Sainsburys at Meadowbank. Looks like the camera team were taking a break, maybe at Kentucky Fried Chicken, though that could be co-incidence.

6:18p Cleaner recommendation please? and warning
Does anybody have any recommendations for a cleaner? We're wanting someone that will come and give our flat (in Musselburgh) a proper 'spring clean' to start us off and make it sparkly and then come about once a fortnight to dust, hoover, clean the bathroom, kitchen etc so that I can spend my time looking after my sprogie and doing the (huge amounts of nappy) washing rather than scrubbing floors!
And my warning is to steer clear of Merry Maids of East Edinburgh. We had arranged for them to do the above, starting with our 'deep clean' yesterday... I could rant all day about it, but basically two of them turned up, did pretty much bugger all for an hour and a half and left. (amusingly, leaving 'clean me' in the dust on the cooker hood, written by my husband the previous week!) I called and complained and they got sent right back and proceeded to do a very grumpy second 'clean' for an hour. After this supposed deep clean (costing £100 !!) I made a 4 page list of all the things that were untouched and still dusty/dirty. I called the manager this morning to be told i was "making her angry". I told her that I'd canceled their £100 cheque and she said that she was from "a big franchise company that would see me in court" and hung up on me!
So, who is better than Merry Maids?
